The story behind George Costanza’s toupee comes alive in the Seinfeld episode 15, “The Beard,” from Season 6.
This plot begins when George’s friend sets him up on a date. During their evening out, George discovers that the woman sitting with him is bald.
Shocked and upset, George confronts his friend, complaining dramatically, “You fixed me up with a bald woman!”
The storyline quickly turns comical when Elaine, brilliantly portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, overhears George’s complaint and immediately confronts his hypocrisy.
She says, “You’re rejecting someone because they’re bald?”
George, stubborn and defensive, replies casually, “So?”
Elaine, doubtful at George’s denial, loudly retorts, “YOU ARE BALD!” George confidently counters, “I was bald, but now I’m not,” proudly referring to his new toupee.
Frustrated by his stubborn denial and superficiality, Elaine grabs George’s toupee, snatches it off his head, and throws it straight out the window.
This comedic moment became one of Seinfeld’s most celebrated humorous scenes when the audience first discovered that George had been wearing a toupee.

The reason it looks thin is that I challenged my designer to make me a piece that would look very similar to the way I did 10 years ago.
So, it looks like a guy who is losing his hair and isn’t an artificial mop of hair that I never had. The designer was dubious at first, but he actually loves the look now. And the fact is that we are still playing around with the shape and density to make it as flattering and natural-looking as we can.”
